Originally conceived in 1986, the Midwest Consortium for Latino Research (MCLR) is the result of scholarly discussions about the lack of research and training opportunities for Latino researchers, faculty, and students in Midwestern colleges and universities. In 1988 a group of Latino faculty from institutions of higher education in Illinois, Indiana, lowa, Michigan, Nebraska, and Wisconsin received an 18 month planning grant from the Joyce Foundation to develop an organizational and financial plan for MCLR. At the end of the grant period, De Paul University, Indiana University-Bloomington, Michigan State University, and the University of Illinois-Chicago provided seed monies to implement the plan. Since that time the University of lowa, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and University of Wisconsin-Madison have become members. These seven, MCLR Member Institutions committed their support to MCLR and agreed to pay membership dues to offset costs for establishing an administrative office at Michigan State University and fund activities for an initial three-year period, beginning July 1, 1990. Additionally, the University of Michigan Ann-Arbor and Wayne State University have joined MCLR to form a collaboration of highly respected Midwest universities. The MCLR Secretariat is administratively housed at Michigan State University.
